Ellis Piper - Lullaby for Laika / Fantasia for Félicette
Two companion songs remembering the small lives sent into space, and the love that refuses to leave them behind.
Release date: Friday, September 25, 2026
Release Summary
Drawing upon the vastness of the cosmos as a metaphor for loss, Ellis Piper’s Lullaby for Laika and Fantasia for Félicette explore the longing to keep someone close when they are already drifting beyond reach. Written two years apart, the companion songs approach grief from opposite sides of goodbye: Lullaby for Laika was written while processing the untimely loss of a beloved family dog, while Fantasia for Félicette reflects on the tender, complicated experience of grieving someone who is still beside you.
The recordings continue Piper’s exploration of intimate, atmospheric musical storytelling through soft, close-mic’d vocals, sweeping strings, lush piano, fingerpicked guitar, shimmering banjo, and spacious ambient textures. Together, the songs form a meditation on space, time, and the gravity of letting go.

The Story of Lullaby for Laika

With Lullaby for Laika, Ellis Piper draws on one of the most enduring stories of the Space Age to tell a deeply personal one.
Written after the untimely loss of a family dog, the song is inspired by Laika, the stray dog launched into low Earth orbit by the Soviet Union on November 3, 1957, as the first living creature to circle the planet. Although celebrated as a milestone in space exploration, Laika's mission was never intended to bring her home.
For Ellis Piper, the ever-expanding vastness of space became a metaphor for grief: the harrowing, relentless feeling of watching someone you love drift farther and farther away until they're beyond your reach.
Lullaby for Laika is a ballad, a prayer, and a conversation across that impossible distance, asking the questions we ask whenever we lose someone: Were you afraid? Are you somewhere beautiful? Did you know you were loved? And at its heart, the song is driven by an earnest longing: I wish I could bring you home.
Carried by Ellis Piper's delicate, intimate vocals, the song is anchored by acoustic guitar, banjo, and sweeping strings, while shimmering layers of atmospheric ambience float overhead. The instrumentation balances grounded warmth with the boundless expanse of space, creating a setting for a song that is both personal and universal.
The Story of Fantasia for Félicette
Written two years after its companion piece, Lullaby for Laika, Fantasia for Félicette turns to a comparatively lesser-known story from the early Space Age to explore a different form of grief.
The song is inspired by Félicette, the stray cat recruited by the French space program and launched into space on October 18, 1963, becoming the first feline to make the journey beyond Earth's atmosphere. Unlike Laika, Félicette survived her mission, returning to Earth with electrodes still implanted in her brain to monitor the effects of spaceflight, but was euthanized two months later for neurological examination.
Rather than recounting the tragic events that would follow, Ellis Piper imagines the fragile weeks immediately after her return, when something inside her has already begun to drift beyond the reach of those who love her.
Through intimate lines such as “There's stardust in your eyes", “You drift when you dream", and the repeated plea, “Mais je veux que tu restes ici, avec moi" (“But I want you to stay here with me”), the song encompasses the tender ache of loving someone who is still beside you while knowing they are here on borrowed time. It is a meditation on anticipatory grief.
Built around shimmering piano, impressionistic harmonies inspired by French composers, and sweeping strings performed by Piper, the arrangement is layered with acoustic guitar, banjo, and ethereal ambient textures. The result is a dreamlike, weightless soundscape that drifts between Earth and the stars, mirroring the lyrics’ delicate balance between wonder and heartbreak.
